Questions about 10.1

asked on April 18, 2016 Show version history
  1. Offline forms: how do lookups behave? Are lookup sources also saved on the local device (maybe on a sqlite database on the hard drive) and made available to the offline form?
  2. Editing Office docs inside WA: The ability to view them is cool, but what about editing them? If it is being worked on, will it work seamlessly with version control? Also, any plans for a viewer/editor that doesn't require Office Web Apps Server (similar to how office docs can be uploaded to Google Drive, which automatically converts their format to be viewable/editable inside the browser without requiring MS Office)?
  3. WA Folder Refresh: I watched the webinar video but didn't see anything about a folder refresh button when a folder's contents change. Is that still happening?

  1. According to the 10.1 sneak peak webinar, Offline Forms does not currently support lookups, but it is on the roadmap for a future version.

Hi Armando,

Would you let me know how complicated is your lookup rules and how large will be the database table you plan to make offline and will you be concerned with security? You can also email ( lfmobile[at]laserfiche[dot]com) with your use case and we are currently working on that and would like to know how users would expect the behavior.

Hi Ege,

  1. What Blake said wink
  2. Yes, we're definitely looking into it. This was a good way to get initial viewing in place. To my mind, even if you aren't looking to use it in the doc viewer, just having it in the preview pane is pretty invaluable. We're investigating being able to tie into people's individual online office/office 365 accounts to allow directly tying into the web editing views, but that's down the road.
    1. Also, you're correct that there are public services that don't require a local install of Office Web Apps, but they are public and can't access secured documents (not to mention the possible security ramifications of uploading secured documents). We're investigating if we could make use of that in a public portal scenario though.
  3. There's no changes to auto-refresh at the moment. We have plans for this, but weren't able to include them in 10.1.

Thanks Pava!

The folder refresh is by far the biggest thing for us. I know we discussed it before in other threads, and you said a "refresh" button will appear when the folder contents change that will need to be clicked by the user, but the more we talk to our users the more we realize that the expectation is for the refresh to happen automatically -- both for the contents pane and the folder tree pane. If you guys can nail that, we'll ditch the thick client altogether and deploy WA for all of our customers moving forward.

Anyway, this is a great update all around. Thanks for listening to the community. smiley

Sure thing.

The biggest thing with the refresh is how it impacts work they are already doing. Losing their place in the folder tree, interrupting ongoing actions. Especially as more and more things are items the users can interact with directly from the main screens without going into dialogs. That's why we've been looking at alternative approaches like a notification prompt (like Answers here has), but we'll keep looking into it. It's definitely on the list - we definitely want to address anything that might be keeping people from feeling they have to stay on the desktop Client! laugh

HI Justin, do you have any idea when you will provide a solution to keep the lookup experience on Offline forms ?  I can found this on Coming Attractions presented on empower 2015 ? this PPT is available on the support Site ?

Merci beaucoup.

Can we get some more details on the first point? We have a client that wants to use offline forms but need more information.

1. So it is only available offline in Laserfiche Mobile 10.1?

2. Is there a limit to the number of forms you can fill out?

3. Is there any documentation? I didnt see anything in Forms 10.1 help file.

4. Is it possible to add a signature to the Form while it is offline? Saved image or with stylus?

Thanks!

Justin,

I understand no lookups, but is it true, no scripts & no calculations?

Nope, not true. The only thing it can't handle currently is lookups to external servers, since it currently can't cache that. Scripts, calculations, field rules, everything else is supported.

Very nicely done!

Now, please say lookups coming next week wink

Another question, say I have a field which triggers lookup in forms, now since it doesn't work currently in offline version, is it possible that it fills the lookup data during submission?

Hi Sahil, it's not supported in current release. We are looking at this in later versions for users who don't want to make the db offline on device too. Though this can also be tricky when there're multiple matches returned of the look up. Will it be error proning if it's selected automatically or you can make sure it's always one to one mapping?

Currently it's only one mapping.

Of course would be better if multiple can work, but for now only one will work too

Hi Sahil,

As I talked to Armando above, Would you let me know how complicated is your lookup rules and how large will be the database table you plan to make offline and will you be concerned with security?

You can also email us ( lfmobile[at]laserfiche[dot]com) with your use case and we are currently working on that and would like to know how users would expect the behavior.
