Question

In Forms - Value is Required - displayed after uploading file to a form using an iPhone

asked on May 1, 2020

Hello,

Using Laserfiche Forms Professional Version 10.4.0.1256

We recently went live with our first online public facing form (Tree Planting Rebate form) and all has been working well.  The Form requires the submitter to complete it, upload a copy of the receipt for the tree, as well as a photo of that newly planted tree.  Over the last few days we have received 5 calls from people who are using iPhones.  They are able to complete the form, and it appears that they have uploaded the required photo and receipt, however, when they hit the submit button, the form will not submit, and "Value is Required" is shown in red under the upload button.

We have used the following workaround, that seems (at least in 2 cases) to allow them to submit their form:

1.  Open a new blank instance of the form.

Note:  I have them leave the previously completed form open in case they end up needing to print it to pdf and attach to an email (with their photo and copy of receipt) to send directly to me - as another workaround if this one does not help.  Once they email it to me, I can submit it for them and they (and us too) will still get the benefit of the Forms process (email confirmation, status when processed, reports, filed into Laserfiche etc.).

2.  Scroll to the section where the file upload takes place.

3.  Change the order the files are uploaded in.  The form asks for the Proof of Purchase first, then the Proof of Planting.  I have them upload the proof of planting first (in the Proof of Purchase section) then the Proof of Purchase (in the Proof of Planting section).

In 2 instances so far, the files have uploaded and they can complete the rest of the form (and submit it) after making that change.

In the future, when designing forms, it may be beneficial for me to set up the upload section so that the file that is expected to be the largest is the one that is uploaded first.

This, so far, has only been an issue with some iPhones.  Coworkers have tested this form with their iPhones and it has worked just fine.  No issues uploading.

We have received about 70 forms so far, and have had 5 calls with the issue above.  So, for the most part everything is working as expected.

I wanted to submit this in case someone else might find it helpful.  As I was trying to find a solution, I think I did come across somewhere in Answers where it was recommended that the order of file upload be reversed, and it would solve a similar issue.  I could not re-find that, so at the risk of being redundant, am posting this.  Also want to give credit where it is due.

I also found the following similar issue posted on a Wordpress support site regarding an iPhone and a non Laserfiche Forms form:

https://wordpress.org/support/topic/cant-upload-files-on-iphone/

They did not have a solution posted.  Wanted to pass that along too.

Also, users experiencing this issue have been using the following methods to submit:

1.  Directly from their iPhone (images of tree and receipt captured by camera on phone - saved to phone) then form completed and images accessed for upload.

2.  Directly from their iPhone - form completed, camera option used to get images uploaded.

2.  Using a PC or a Mac (after having used the iPhone to capture the images, emailing the images to themselves, and saving them on their computer for retrieval).

Thanks for listening (reading),

If you have other solutions please let me know.

Christine

Update 05/01/2020

Just had another one.  From a system running Windows 10.  Don't know the type of phone or camera used to capture the image.  The issue was happening when they tried to submit the photo of the tree, which I believe would be the larger of the files.  They did end up getting the form submitted, but I have not been able to talk with them about what they did to resolve.

I edited the Form so that the Proof of Planting (photo of the tree) is the first file upload that is asked for.

Hoping this will solve the issue.

Time will tell I guess,

Christine

Another interesting Post from Laserfiche answers that could contain some clues?

Update 5/4/2020

Ok, still getting "Value is Required" message even after rearranging order that we request uploads on the form.

The two calls I have received today - one person was having the issue while using Netscape Navigator (yes he told me he was using Netscape Navigator) and the next person started out using Edge, but used Chrome to launch a new blank form and it worked.

Neither were using iPhones and both were using PCs.

Here are our workarounds:

  1. Start with a fresh blank form and swap the order of file upload.
  2. Try a different web browser.
  3. Fill out the form, save it as a pdf, and email it with attachments.
  4. Print out the form and bring it to us, with a copy of their tree photo and receipt.
  5. Print out the form and mail it to us, with a copy of their tree photo and receipt.

Anyone out there have ideas or experienced this with one of your forms?

Christine
