Question

Thick vs. Thin Client Scanning

asked on June 15, 2016 Show version history

Laserfiche Client 10.0

Web Acess 10.1 (also tried on 10.0 and updated in hopes of fixing it)

I'm running into a strange situation during my testing where a user is able to access Laserfiche Scanning from a folder in the thick client but not able to use web scanning from the same folder within Web Access (meaning the scan button is grayed out).  This folder shows the user's effective rights are browse, read, create documents, and write metadata.  The user belongs to a group with scan and import feature rights.  I also tried explicitly granting those same feature rights on the users account, but nothing changed.

I have also confirmed that users with full rights have the ability to web scan, so it is not a system-wide issue.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Rob,

The original issue is fixed in Web Access 10.1.2, released as part of Laserfiche 10.1 Update 2. Web Access no longer checks Volume security on the selected folder.

For more information, please see KB1013798, which also links to the downloads for Web Access 10.1.2.

I believe that this has something to do with folder's access write.

When scan right is disabled, web access doesn't show it at all. but if web access shows it but grayed out that means on the current folder it is not allowed for the current user to scan in documents.

Please check your folder access right and try the same with different folder and enabling all access rights.

Thanks, Junaid! After more trial and error, I just found that the "Append Data" entry access right is required for web scanning.  Once I confirmed that ALL entry access rights allowed me to web scan, it was just a matter of pinpointing the right(s) I was missing.

It's strange that Laserfiche Scanning doesn't require this right, but web scanning does.

This sounds like a bug. Access right requirements for functionality should be identical between thin vs. thick clients. I thought everything was enforced by Laserfiche Server?

You are right, Web Access is checking the volume rights on the folder, which doesn't seem right to me. I filed bug# 145615 to get this fixed.
