Question

Why does a period in the doc name change the icon?

asked on June 9, 2016

I have multiple documents that have a period ( . ) in the document name.  In the LF 10 client they all show with the same icon, but in the web access 10 they show with another icon that has a red mark in the upper left hand corner.  Why is this?

See document list of those with periods in the name and the icon in attachments.

Note that the only document that doesn't show with the changed icon is the one where the period occurs at the end of the doc name.

Thanks for pointing this out, we will look into fixing it in Web Access (bug #145385).

Have one of my users to thank for asking about the difference in the icons.  But this brings up good question, where would I find information on what special characters can/can't be used in folder and document names as well as in template fields?

Hi Michelle,

Just about anything can go in document and folder names. You can't name it ., .., or include the / charecter (\ is fine), and that's basically it. I've seen people put charecter symbols in names before.

Justin,  thanks for the information on the folder and document names' use of special characters.  What about in template fields?  Is there any documentation on the special characters that shouldn't be used there?

To amend what Justin was saying, '/' is legal in entry names and '\' is forbidden.

Template fields (or at least text fields) should accept any printable characters.

Hi Michelle,

This issue resolved in the recently released Web Access 10.1 Update 1. You can download the hotfix from the support site, here

Ryan,  Thanks for the response.  Just upgraded to 10.1 on 6/15 so I missed having the fix in the installer.  So I went to download the update and it won't open.  Please advise.

Hi Michelle,

The download package seems to be launching fine for me internally. Can you confirm that you right clicked and extracted from the package to get the actual EXE?

Otherwise, was there any error returned when you attempted to run the update? What OS did you attmept to run the package EXE on?

Ryan,  I couldn't even get the zip to download, it seems that the issue is with our network securities.  I appreciate your assistance with this but will have to have our network folks download this for me.

Ryan,  I was able to successfully perform the 10.1 update as well as the Forms 10.1 update.  For those of newer administrators, instructions on the Forms update at https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1013775#appliesto

need to include the database update step in the configuration tool after the restart of the Forms Routing Service.  Thanks!

Michelle
