Update Word Document - Hyperlinks

asked on June 6, 2016 Show version history

Hey,

Has anyone managed to insert hyperlinks into Word Documents using the "Update Word Document" activity in Workflow? Is it possible?

I'm hoping to add a Click here hyperlink in a Word document that links to a document in Web Access but I've had no luck with my Mail Merge syntax.

I tried using { Hyperlink { MERGEFIELD URL } } in my MailMerge document to try to generate the URL's with no luck frown

Thanks!

Weird. It works for me in a simple test:

Can you attach the Word doc here (if you're OK with having it on a public site) or send a copy to Tech Support?

it should be something like this.

{ HYPERLINK { MERGEFIELD "Link" } \* MERGEFORMAT }

Quick google search brought this.

Hi Junaid,

I tried using that (and many other variations of the syntax) but none of them show up in the Workflow as a Field Name in Workflow to edit!

All other Mail merge fields work fine it's just when trying to embed one within a hyperlink field that it doesn't recognise it.

Thanks

Did you click "Import field names from document"?

Yes. It has no problem picking up the other fields just this!

Thanks

Okay that syntax worked a treat. Thanks Miruna :)

Edit:

I had to add a Merge Field, Right-click > Edit Field..., Choose Hyperlink and click OK. I was left with a message stating "Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.", I deleted the text up until the full stop so as to not delete the hyperlink and entered my own custom text, press ALT + F9 to show the syntax { HYPERLINK }, added a space and just pasted in the following "{ MERGEFIELD URL \* MERGEFORMAT}" which worked. :)

Yeah, creating it was pretty convoluted because it has to have an alias ("Click me") and then you have to go through that Alt+F9 business to show the field codes (for some reason Word doesn't have the "Toggle field codes" option for hyperlink fields).

@████████  Is there anyway you can have the merge url field show custom text as the label? So I don't want it to say click here but maybe some other text.

Anyone able to get more than one hyperlink variable to work on a single word document.  We want to populate 3, but no matter what we try could only get one hyperlink merge field to work.

How is your document set up? If you're trying to put all values into a single field, you'll have to set it up as a table so Workflow knows to insert them separately.

No they were 3 separate merge fields with different field names, linking to LF Forms we have created.  We are thinking it may be a word limitation since every time we try to create, once we reopen the document in word before adding it to the workflow, the Hyperlink fields change all the formatting we put into them when they were made.

I realize this response is a little late however I recently struggled to get multiple hyperlink mergefields to function properly and found a solution. I thought it was worth it to add the solution to this post for future reference.

The solution is to add a modified SET field inside each HYPERLINK field alongside each MERGEFIELD.  I attached a document with steps and screenshots for anyone needing additional guidance.
