Question

scanning virtual desktop (Different computer name each login)

asked on May 10, 2016 Show version history

We're running LF 8. We have a couple of users that have Fujitsu Scanners configured via WIA. Each time they login to a desktop they are required to setup their scanning settings, this is because they get a new computer name each time they connect. Is there an option to use a Wildcard for ScanEngine attribute in the user attributes?

I've bandaided this by exporting the ScanEngine-Desktop01 settings and added Desktop02 thru 99, but this could become an issue if more desktops are created. Also, this currently only effects 2 or 3 users, but in time will effect many more.

Greetings!

I've had to do something similar, though not with Laserfiche.  We have a good number of virtual desktops, though with our setup most users get the same machine over and over, and have their profiles redirected.

In some test pools we use, though, we do have nonpersistent virtual desktops.  In those cases the machines are wiped on logout.

In one case we had an old app which stored its settings in a folder on c:.

For this app, we set up a .BAT for the users to use when using this app.  We added some error detection, etc, but the basics were:

  1. Copy all config files from <user's network share> to config folder on C:
  2. start the app
  3. Copy all config file back to <user's network share>

So... in this case, I'd set up a script or two to copy whatever you need - files, registry settings, etc - for the scan settings off to a user's share.  Set one script at login, one at logoff to copy the files back.

It's a bit of a hack, but should take care of it.

Since the configuration/attributes for Laserfiche Scanning are in the Database, there is no script that could do this without allowing users to write to the database.

The other option I have is to limit the non-persistent pool for our Scanning users, then there would only be 5 or 6 desktops to import into the database for each user, but then I'll have 5-6 desktops running when they are off duty that are not available for other users, wasting resources. I'm not that worried about it, but just not optimal. I'm hoping someone would say LF 10 changes this, but it doesn't sound like that is going to happen.
