Question

Required conditional fields

asked on May 6, 2016 Show version history

Can I make metadata fields required based on certain conditions?  For example, if a date is entered in a field, users will be required to enter a comment in the Comments field.  The comment field will only be required if there is a date entered.  This is Laserfiche client not forms.

Thanks!

Practically every single client of ours has asked for this feature at some point. They saw it in Forms and asked why they couldn't do conditional logic in repository metadata fields too. Which we don't have a good answer for unfortunately. It's troubling that the modules (Forms vs Client/WA) have totally different paradigms for user input.

We were hoping WA 10 was going to have a CSS/JS customization section like Forms so that we could implement our own field rule logic but it didn't make the cut I think. I still have my fingers crossed. Hopefully next version!

You can use field rules to accomplish this. So add a comments field on the form and mark it as required. Then add a field rule that says if the date field has a value show the comment field. When the comment field is not shown, it is not required, but when it is shown it is required.

Are you referring to Laserfiche forms?  I just want to clarify that I'm talking about the metadata associated with a document within Laserfiche client.

Hi Blia,

Conditional required fields is not currently available within the Laserfiche Client. Could you provide some more information about the scenario here?
