Question

Persistent blank option in a Dropdown

asked on May 5, 2016 Show version history

Hi all! I have a persistent blank option in a dropdown field that doesn't exist when I am editing the form or on the Preview but it does exist in the regularly ran form. This form is part of a process so it is not like I can just run it on its own. Even if I create a new dropdown it has a blank space in "production".

Not sure what else to try.

It seems like the KB1013728 for Forms 9.2 fixes the issue: https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1013728

Here is the list of all fixes that the update provides, I have underlined the ones that I am currently having issues with.

  • Forms no longer automatically inserts a null (1) choice for radio button and checkbox fields after removing all choices and selecting the Add "Other" choice option. (123980)
  • The Extensions option in the File Upload field has a 500 character limit. (127282)

This update requires a manual update to your Forms database.

  • In certain processes involving gateways, Forms could incorrectly display the status of an instance as completed when there is still an in-progress user task. This issue is now resolved. (128362)
  • Previously, copying a process could incorrectly copy any File Upload fields that are located in a collection or table such that Save to Repository service tasks later in the process would not save the files to Laserfiche. This issue is now resolved. (129166)
  • The Field Rule page displays the variable name for variables without labels. (130226)
  • Removing the first row in a table or collection no longer clears out options on drop-down fields in the table or collection. (130549)
  • Forms now prevents users from submitting forms where a required drop-down field is blank. (130737)
  • Forms no longer displays null choices on forms for deleted items in drop-down fields and radio button fields. (131676)
  • The ReCAPCHA option now functions as expected for public users submitting a form. (132750)
  • In certain situations, read-only single line or drop-down fields values populated by a lookup rule may not carry forward to a subsequent user task form. This issue is now resolved. (133804)
  • Forms no longer inserts <br> into a multi-line field's value when it is used as the default value in a subsequent form in the process. (136057)
  • Forms now correctly imports processes that contain a File Upload field in a collection or table. Previously the imported process would be unable to save the uploaded files into Laserfiche. (136282)
  • Forms can now properly process submitted forms that contain more than 500 fields. (137824)
  • Forms no longer displays duplicate LDAP participant user accounts when a domain administrator changes the base distinguished name for an account. (137897)
  • Forms no longer caches unnecessary data when refreshing a form. (137941)
  • Improved performance when populating fields from lookup data in a form. (138454)
  • Users that belong to a large number of groups now properly inherit form access rights from groups. (138502)
  • The Laserfiche Forms Routing Service could become unstable when processing a large number of submissions followed by a Save to Repository service task. This issue is now resolved. (138572)

Hi Lidija, there is blank option by default in order to make the dropdown select blank by default when open form. If you don't want this blank option, you can set one choice as default value for the dropdown by clicking the number in front of the choice when editing the field.

Hi Xiuhong, that is a great feature that I wasn't aware of!

You can see in my screenshot that it has the first blank option, the two values and then another blank option. Taking your advice makes one default and removes all blank options.

I would like to have one blank space as default and two values for this field if possible, but blank spaces shouldn't count as a valid option. This is not an issue with the Starting Form, only with the second form which is a bit odd.

Thanks!

If you want to keep the blank space as default but don't want it to be count as valid option, you can set the dropdown to be required, then when submit, only non-blank option can be submitted.

Would that be javascript to follow the 'no blanks' condition or is there a checkbox?

Before you showed me the default trick, it allowed blank options to be selected and submitted

Just select "required" from the field options for the dropdown field then it will not allow to submit with blank option selected.

The field was already required and it lets the blank one through (meaning I can click on Accept or Deny and the form will go through its process). I think I will explore the javascript in this case since it is being weird. Thanks!
