If I Only Need the (%BP Instance ID)...

I have a workflow that only needs the %(BP Instance ID) value from the Forms BP that kicks off the workflow. If I have checked the "Started by Laserfiche Forms" checkbox in the "View Workflow Properties" dialog of the workflow, do I need to have a "Retrieve Laserfiche Forms Content" activity to make the connection between Forms and Workflow?

No, you don't. The BP instance ID token will get generated when Forms starts the Workflow instance. Retrieve Forms Content is only needed when you want WF to call back into Forms for more data.
