Question on upgrading from avante to rio

asked on April 19, 2016

Hi all,

we will be doing an upgrade from avante to rio sometime soon and were wondering if it is absolutely necessary to have an SSL for this? This is in regards to cutting licenses for applications such as quickfields etc. Also, since we are going from avante to rio will it keep settings like user settings and securities? Any other advice or tips of caution would be appreciated.

If you mean do you have to set up SSL for the Laserfiche Directory Service to work properly just for licensing purposes, then the answer is no. If you plan on using it for single sign-on, then yes, you have to set up SSL.

I'd recommend setting up SSL anyway, with a self-signed certificate if certificate cost is why you're looking into whether SSL is required. You are authenticating to the administration site for Directory Service and your browser will most likely ask you for you domain credentials. Without SSL, those get passed on to the web server in clear text. It's unlikely you have people on your internal network sniffing that traffic, but still.

We are essentially just making sure there won't be any conflicts with anything. The customer is very touchy about not having any downtime after this because they use the system all day long. Also, in regards to that comment, all of the clients for now will still be on 8.3 avante while the server will be upgraded to the newest version of 9 with rio. will this cause any sort of issue with the client machines? everything should still sync just fine and there should be no issues there either, correct? all rights, groups, tags etc. should still be in place?

Yes, all of that should be fine. If the Server is in the same location, you don't even need to reinstall it (although you can to upgrade) it'll just be getting it's license from the Directory server, not the Laserfiche activation site.  Ensure the serial number is the same (it should be), since that could impact Client applications that rely on the Serial numbers matching up with the Laserfiche Server.

Thanks all,

we are just being extra cautious since this is the first Rio installation/upgrade we have done. it does seem straight forward but I know there are always weird issues people run into from time to time so we are just trying to "make sure" essentially. thanks for all of the input!
