Question

Audit Trail Database purges?

asked on April 14, 2016

We have a customer who has an Audit Trail database that is pretty big.  When they would try to run a report, it would eventually time out because the DB was so large.  We created a new DB for them and got them to report on only 1 year at a time, which worked.  Then then added another year, and it still worked.  Finally, they added a third year, and that causes the report to time out.  They then eliminated year 1 and 2 from the report and tried again, but it still timed out.  Our question is, does the DB purge itself after a report is change or has information removed from it?

Yes, there is an hourly job that deletes unwanted events from the audit reporting databases.

Is that something we have to kick off ourselves or is it automatic?

It's automatic.  The only way to influence it is by restarting the Audit Trail server; the job will start shortly after the service starts up and it runs every 60 minutes.
