Question

Using SSL with IP address

asked on April 9, 2016

Is there a way to use SSL when the server is not part of a domain, i.e. the desktop client attaches to the server via IP address? Or do you have to make it part of a domain?

For SSL to be properly secure, the server has to have a certificate for the name the client uses to connect to it.  I believe it's possible to get a certificate issued to an IP address, but it's pretty uncommon.  But note that there is a difference between your DNS infrastructure and your Windows Domain - you can assign a DNS name to a device without adding it to your Windows domain - and it's the DNS name that is going to be in the SSL cert.
