Best Practice for volumes on Windows disk drives

asked on March 22, 2016

Hello Everybody,

I have a Laserfiche Server 9.2.0, and about 7.2 TB of data distributed on many volumes. The volumes are stored on 22 disks of the Windows 2008 R2 Server where Laserfiche is installed, which have decreased the number of letters available for new drives. I suppose the amount of data we have is smaller than other ones, therefore I want to know (if there are) what are the best practices for volumes distribution, or for windows disk drives using for volumes.

Any comment will be appreciated,

Cristian

There is a Volume whitepaper that may be helpful in determining location and size/rollover considerations.

Thanks for your reply, Chris.

In the section "Volume Location", it says something about keeping volumes on different machines than Laserfiche Server, but I would like to know if there are best practices from disk drive point of view, maybe just thinking of several large files (not just volumes) and how they will be stored in a windows server machine.

What that section is getting at is that IO throughput for a computer has its limitations, and you might see performance improvements if you are able to spread the disk I/O operations across multiple file servers.  You can a tool like Performance Monitor to track disk activity and see if it could be causing problems.  I'm not sure what you're asking about several large files - are these large files on the volumes, or do you mean something else?

You're right. Perhaps I didn´t write well what I want to tell you, it's not about I/O Performance and maybe is not related to volumes explicitly. Since we installed Laserfiche Server, we have started using local disk drive for volumes. Nowadays, our Laserfiche Volumes has been growing and growing in size, and are located in the same Laserfiche Server. We have 22 disk drives with volumes that have many files, and I am thinking if there are a best practice about Disk Drive organization/distribution for Laserfiche Volumes, or another good way to keep Volumes with a lot of files.
