PDF Generate Laserfiche Pages Image File Size

asked on March 16, 2016

I am noticing the following when choosing to Generate Laserfiche Pages from a PDF using Import / Drag Drop.

Multi page PDF is approx 300k, I generate pages and drop the PDF now each individual Image Page is approx 50000K to even 1 MB therefore a 300k PDF if it is 7 Pages becomes 3.5 MB to 7 MB when converted to image files in Laserfiche.

Perhaps I am missing something obvious I know that when using Snapshot the Image quality hence the output page image size can be adjust for a quality / size. However I am not aware of where I can adjust the settings for the "Generate Laserfiche Pages" option for PDF's.

To be sure I tested changing the Image Quality in Snapshot and the OCR Quality but neither had an affect as I anticipated.

I generally lean towards Image Files for ease of use in Laserfiche, Annotations, Document Manipulation and particularly for Workflow Automation Processing but this is a significant difference in resource requirements for PDF's vs Image Files.

Depending on how your PDF was created, you are correct that PDFs can be much more space efficient than TIF images. The PDF file format is extremely flexible, and one of the ways it can be used to represent a document (especially if it is composed of simple lines and text) is as a series of drawing commands to render that text. Imagine in a worst case scenario, you have a blank page with the word TEST in the center. The PDF can be written so that it contains a single drawing instruction, draw "TEST" at those coordinates... maybe a 1k file when you include some of the overhead for the file header and other necessary structure. When you convert it to a TIF, you are actually then storing all the pixel data for each point on the page. (For example, 8.5in * 11in * 200pixels/in * 32bit/pixel = 600kb). However, a PDF could also just be a pure image on the back end (for instance, if you export a TIF document out of Laserfiche as a PDF, it just inserts the image into a PDF wrapper and you get no space-reduction from any clever drawing commands).

You can choose to generate monochrome pages from the client options:

There is a separate setting under the "Generate Pages" options for pages generated from pdfs inside the repository.

In the Generate Pages area of the Options menu, try unchecking the preserve annotations on Laserfiche pages box.  Are they color images?
