Question

Laserfiche Directory User

asked on March 16, 2016 Show version history

Dear Laserfiche,

This is from the "What is new in Laserfiche RIO 10":

Global Laserfiche User Accounts
You can now create global Laserfiche user accounts through the Directory Server administration site. In contrast to Laserfiche repository user accounts, a global Laserfiche user account is not limited to the context of a single Laserfiche repository. Previously, to allow a user access to two repositories, you would either need to add them to the repository as a Windows or Novell eDirectory account, or you would need to create two separate repository users and grant each one its own license. Now, you can create a single Laserfiche directory user and grant it a single license, and use it to sign in to both repositories.

and This is from "Laserfiche RIO 10 FAQ":

Repository Named User
A repository named user is a named user license allocated to a repository user. First, you allocate a specific number of repository named user licenses to a specific Laserfiche Server. Then, you assign each license to a single user in a single repository. The license is not shared between repositories, because a repository user object only exists in one repository. For example, if the repository user JDoe exists in two repositories and you want that user to be able to log in to both, you will need to allocate two repository named user licenses, one for each repository. This is true even if they are on the same Laserfiche Server.

I think there is a contradiction on the above. please advice.

Thanks,

There isn't. Notice the naming distinction between "global" users and "repository" users. If you create a repository user (within the repository, through LFAdmin Console), then it is tied to that repository and has not access to other repositories since they have no knowledge the user exists. If you create a global user in Laserfiche Directory Service, then the user is available to all repositories on servers that connect to LFDS. In this case, the Laserfiche user behaves like a Windows user, which is visible to multiple repositories and can be trusted for login to any of these repositories.

Hi Miruna,

Am I right to assume that we can set the password of a global user in the LFDS? Do we need to upgrade to Rio 10.x to take advantage of the global user account? We are currently running Rio 9.2.

Yes, global users are managed in LFDS, including their passwords. And yes, you need to update at least the Laserfiche server and LFDS to version 10 to take advantage of global users.

That's correct: the passwords (and the password policy) for the global users are managed within LFDS.

And yes, you do need to upgrade to Rio 10 to use this new user type.

Thanks for the quick response Miruna.

Will workflow 9 and Quickfields 8.x work with Laserfiche server 10.x?

Yes. The Laserfiche Server is backwards compatible with older applications.

Initially, can we just upgrade our License Manager 8.3 to LFDS 10.x without upgrading our Laserfiche 9.2 server? We plan to upgrade our LF server to the latest version later.

Yes, you can. However, to use global users, you will need to update the Laserfiche Server as well.

If you have already created a repository user in a repository and I want to move that repository use to a Global Laserfiche User, what would be the proper way of doing that?

Dear All,

Is there a way to allow a user access to different repositories that are not hosted on the same Laserfiche Server with the same licence. or even with different licences (a licence for each server).
what i want is to have a single sign on for multiple repositories ?

thank you in advance

Yes, using global LFDS Laserfiche users as discussed above will allow you to do this. You don't need to allocate licenses to specific users unless you are specifically using Repository users.

thank you justin,
i knew i could do this with different repositories on the same server.
i was not sure for multiple repositories on different laserfiche server.
in my case i have a client who has 5 geographic sites with laserfiche RIO we install for each site an individual installation (laserfiche server+workflow+forms...ect), with LFDS install on one of the 5 sites.
so now they want to set global users instead of repository users, so each user can connect and use the 5 repositories (in 5 different servers).
So you confirm that it is possible for a global user to access all the 5 repositories at the same time with only one licence?

Yes, if all Lf Server are connecting to the same LFDS instance.
