If you do a condition starting rule with the event type being Entry Created, that you cover documents that are imported.  As far as it having a certain template, add in the condition that the Entry: Template Name equals "template A" along with any other conditions such as the path.  As far as changing the metadata field, that would be one of the steps inside the workflow to assign metadata.
