What is an Alternate Electronic Document?

In the SDK 9.2, in the RepositoryAccess namespace there is a method called CreateAlternateEdoc.  The documentation assumes the user (me) knows what an alternative electronic document is, which I don't.  Can someone please explain what an "Alternative Electronic Document" is and how it is different from a regular document?  Thanks.

It's a piece of functionality in the server that has not yet been put to use by any client application.  One proposed use is to store HTML representations of edocs for web display.  You shouldn't need to access this in your integration.

This feature is not exposed in the user interface of any of the Laserfiche products.
