Question

Question

Are reading barcodes faster than reading Zone OCR

asked on February 18, 2016

Hi there,

I have gone through LF Answers where it has been mentioned that reading a barcode is much more accurate than reading text with a Zone OCR. Is the speed of reading a barcode much better comparable to ZoneOCR?

Thanks to advise.

Kind Regards,

Sheila

If you replace a Zone OCR process with a Barcode process, that step should run faster.

Chris's comment referred to the strategy of putting certain processes in the "Pre-Classification" section instead of "First Page Identification" so that they only run once per page, even if you have multiple document classes in your session. Taking advantage of this strategy can improve the overall speed of your session regardless of whether you're using Barcode or Zone OCR.

Hi Sheila,

In my own testing of these in the past, reading bar codes is slightly slower than zonal OCR as you can refer to the already existing document text if you are processing multiple document classes. Having said that, the accuracy improvement is well worth the speed difference/sacrifice.

Hope this helps answer your question!

If by "refer to the already existing document text" you mean putting the Zone OCR process in the "Pre-Classification Processing section", you can actually do the same thing with Barcode, in which case using Barcode should be faster overall smiley

Yeah that's what I was talking about. Didn't know you could do that with Barcodes also. Useful tip! Thanks Tessa! yes

Yes, I guess if the Barcode process is placed in the Pre-Classification Processing section, then reading barcodes will be much faster.

It depends on which section the barcode process is placed. If its placed in the First Page Identification process, will reading it take much more time? Thanks to advise.
