You can use Social BPM with or without SSL.

so SSL is just needed for single sign-on which cannot work without an ssl configuration? true?

That's correct. If you're not using Laserfiche Directory Service for single sign-on, SSL is not required. Be aware that without SSL, passwords are sent from the browser to the server in clear text, therefore can be intercepted.
