Slow template search results after upgrading to version 10 - workaround available

Just a quick note in case anyone else runs into this problem...

After the upgrade to 10 we experienced degraded search performance on a template search, querying just one field, that caused query response times to go from less than two seconds on LF9 to over two minutes on LF10. After working with Laserfiche they found a workaround and search times are back to normal. Hope this saves someone else a few days of troubleshooting.

For anyone that is curious, the problem was that by default the Laserfiche client will include all the fields of the template as columns in the search result. If the template has many fields, this could result in the Laserfiche server generating an SQL query which might take a very long time for the database server to process, even if there is only one search result. The solution was to disable this behavior in the Laserfiche client, which you can do via a trustee attribute setting. We are not quite sure why it is much slower to display in LF 10, but I've observed this behavior on earlier versions of Laserfiche myself.

To turn off the automatic addition of template columns to the listing, create a trustee attribute named "[Options]AddTemplateColumns" using the Administration Console and set the value to "No". That can dramatically speed up field searches when the template has many fields. Note that this is supported in earlier versions of Laserfiche.

One of our large customers (a Run Smarter Award-winner) just ran into this issue. Unfortunately, they aren't happy with the work-around, because they rely on having the template fields displayed in their search results.

Any word on when we can expect a fix for this? We just upgraded them from v9 to v10 last week, and they aren't happy about this.

I am seeing a similar problem with displaying columns in a folder. Template columns more than about seven will significantly slow down display of files within the folder or when sorting by a column even if the folder has one file in it. However columns like Creation Date and Type do not have this effect. I can add 15 or so of these with minimal slow down in displaying.

The customer is not happy with the solution of removing columns as they rely on having the template data handy for their process.

Examples:

A folder with 26 entries and no Template columns displays instantly. Same folder with seven columns take 13 seconds. With nine columns takes 60 and gets worse from there.

Is this normal? System is running on full SQL on a separate server utilizing 4 cores and 32 GB of memory. At least 3 of the four cores maxes out when doing one of these searches.

When you use the SDK to search, you explicitly select the columns to include, so there is no corresponding change to make. The attribute change Michael mentioned changes the way the client application uses the SDK.
