Question

Does a change made on a workflow will impact on an already running instance?

asked on February 16, 2016

Hi all,

I have a document which is running on a workflow. At the same time, I did a change in the workflow from Workflow Designer (i.e. I added a new condition) and I published the workflow again.. It seems that the changes made have not been applied to the instance of the workflow which is running on the document. Does a change made on a workflow will be applied to the running instance of that document?

Thanks to confirm.

Kind Regards,

Sheila

When you published the workflow again, there should be a popup that says "Instances of [Workflow] are currently running. Would you like to update them?" Hitting 'yes' there will apply your change to all of those running workflows. The one exception is that the activity which is currently running when you publish an update won't be updated until after the activity has finished waiting.

Thank you, Robert. Yes the popup message has been prompted. In my workflow, I have added a condition in a Wait Entry Change activity. But, the changes have not been updated on the document whereby the workflow is running. Thanks to advise.

Kind Regards,

Sheila

As Kevin said above, currently running activities can't be updated. So if your instance was waiting in the Wait for Entry Change already, the new condition will not be evaluated. Only activities after that will see the changes.
