Question

WebLink PDFs slow to start download

asked on January 15, 2016

Client is having issues with their PDFs in web access when a download is initiated(when it asks where you want to save, etc.), and when you choose to download one it takes upwards of 2-3 minutes for a download box to appear afterwards. Here is the info I got on 2 different documents:
1st file:
228.62 MB
1494 Pages
TIF: 765.14 MB
TXT: 4.79 MB

http://archive.corvallisoregon.gov/Browse.aspx?dbid=0&startid=727622&row=1&cr=1

2nd File:
975 Pages
TIF: 625.85 MB

TXT: 311.20 KB

http://archive.corvallisoregon.gov/Browse.aspx?dbid=0&startid=600867&row=1&cr=1

They have their weblink on a DMZ, and goes through a firewall before reaching the LF Server. The error logs contain no relevant info on the issue on either server. Both servers are not under any kind of heavy load.

Hi Ricardo,

Is this an issue with Web Access or with WebLink? Following the links provided I was able to both open in my browser and download both files in no more time than expected for files of their respective sizes. Has the slowness been occurring across multiple machines? Multiple browsers? And where the behavior is occurring, does it happen for all documents or only particular ones? Lastly is this new, or have PDF downloads behaved like this since setting up the public portal?

Regards

It is an issue for WebLink, sorry about that typo. The client says after the PDF becomes bigger than 200MB, it becomes an issue, anything under performs normally. They said it happens for all users, and they have tried IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. And they don't know if this has always been an issue, but that they only have gotten reports of it recently.

Just wish to add that this issue isn't exclusive to PDF files but any electronic file that is over a certain amount (such as 200MB). The problem is that Web Link is programmed in a way that it will stream the entire file first to the client before the "Save" dialog box comes up. That's the reason that on smaller file the dialog appears faster than on a 200MB file.

Here is the fix just go to My Weblink then View Document Options then check PDF Files.
