Question

moving large PDF (130mb) into laserfiche fails and smaller ones don't

asked on December 21, 2015

I have a customer that can drag and drop PDF files from his desktop to his laserfiche repo just fine except when his tries one that is about 132mb. Laserfiche will try to move it but it eventually finishes with none of the images being present. The file will look like its in there with meta data and the file name but then there is no images.

He is running 9.2.1.562 as cleint software and his computer is Windows 7 pro with SP1  Core duo 2.93 and 2gb RAM

Any help on where to trouble shoot this would be great. Thanks.

Could you try from a computer with more memory?

I can try, but this is something that the customer has been able to do fine for a while and they just recently updated their Laserfiche. He said he has been having trouble since the update. Plus the files are local to his computer. Do you think he just needs a RAM upgrade?

Does the file get imported? If the file is already inside LF, can you select "Generate Laserfiche" pages by right clicking on the file?  Does that work or do you get an error message? If the latter, what message do you get?

If it does not get imported, try importing without generating LF pages and text extraction.  IF you do that, does the file get imported then?

If there are no errors, can you check the Client view and make sure you are looking at the image view?

Does it work with Snapshot?

He now has said he got the file to import but it took over an hour. would that be the RAM on his computer or his network?

Dear Lucas,

PDF is a very complex file format, and there are numerous reasons that could cause high memory usage or slow performance. These issues could be specific to individual PDF files, depending on the software that originally generated them.

The Laserfiche PDF Import functionality had undergone a lot of development in the recent releases. Therefore, some changes in performance from version upgrades are expected.

Suggested action

For an accurate determination of the cause of problem, please consider opening a support case request, and provide the problem-causing PDF for testing purpose. Please also cite this question URL for reference.

If you will be attending the 2016 Conference or will have access to the upcoming VAR kit, please make sure to test the problem-causing PDF with the latest version of Laserfiche. As explained above, each recent release of Laserfiche implements new performance tuning for PDF import; due to the diversity of PDF authoring software there may be some regressions on some PDF files.

Alternative actions

If this is not possible due to customer's data privacy policy, there are a number of ways you can investigate. Note that these investigations must still be performed with the original PDF. Also, it may be difficult for us to provide further technical assistance if the user's PDF cannot be provided for testing.

  • Registry settings
    • Check whether the registry key exists, and if so, note its current value.
(To avoid mis-configuration and loss of functionality, please do not change its value unless instructed by Laserfiche support staff.)
    • [HKCU\Software\Laserfiche\Client8\Profile\Settings] "PdfExtractorDirectImageExtraction"
  • Collecting performance statistics (CPU usage and RAM usage) during the PDF import.
