Question

Documents only scope not propagating to child folders

asked on December 11, 2015

I think the access rights scope of "documents only" isn't behaving as it is intended. I need help figuring this out...

I have given the following rights to a group on the parent folder:

  • Scope: This folder and subfolders; Browse, Read, Create Documents
  • Scope: Documents only; Everything except Create Folders and below (entry security stuff)

Users in this group are able to create and edit documents in the parent folder, but not in the child folders.  In fact, list of trustees on the entry access screen for the child folders doesn't show the Documents Only scope item to be inherited.

According to the help documentation, the scope of "documents only" should affect documents in all subfolders.

I would like users in this group to be able to create and edit documents in all folders in this tree, but not be able to rename or create folders. I thought this setup would work, but it is not.

Please advise how I can give users control over documents only in the whole folder tree and make the rights inherit for newly created subfolders. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kenny,

Your entry access rights setup appears to be valid. I tested in Laserfiche 10 and didn't have any issues. One thing to note is that when viewing the access rights of the subfolders, you wouldn't see the inherited rights from the parent where the scope is "Documents only." You'd only see that when looking at the access rights for documents.

However, there could be some other security measure configured that's conflicting. It may be best to contact your reseller if further assistance is needed. Also, if everything appears to be configured properly but there's still an issue, then opening a support case through your reseller may be another option.

Thanks for pointing out that the rights for "documents only" would only appear on the folder it was applied on originally and then the documents underneath.

Our groups are pretty clean, so I don't anticipate conflicting access. We don't use DENY. I guess I'll have to contact our VAR...
