Question

"Missing" Entry ID's

asked on November 18, 2015

I have a customer who is worried about missing some entry ID's. They have noticed gaps in a list of Entry Id's where it might go

1234001

1234002

1234005

1234008

1234009

1234010

etc

What they are wondering (and myself) is how this can happen. When they search for those missing ID's in Audit Trail they do not see any record for them. Is there a process where an entry ID is created then abandoned without storing information about that entry?

If you import a document into a folder and there's a name conflict with the chosen name, there will be a gap. For example, you have SAMPLE1 in a folder and you import SAMPLE1.TIF. The client will pop up a dialog and put SAMPLE1 (2) as the suggested name. That situation can cause a gap.

Entry IDs have never been guaranteed to be gap-free. In fact, no object ID (e.g., volume ID, template ID) in Laserfiche is guaranteed to be free of gaps.

How is the Entry id assigned?  Is it sequential or is it random?

It's not random, and since it can contain gaps it's not truly sequential.  The ids come from auto-increment fields in the RDBMS, but some values will not be used, as in the example Michael provided.  There are also conditions under which MSSQL will skip values, which will cause jumps in Laserfiche ids even outside the type of situation Michael mentioned.
