Question

Quick Fields 9.2 and tasks/multiple running sessions

asked on November 12, 2015

Server is 2008 R2. Im trying to run multiple Quick Fields sessions on the same server, but when I do it runs 1 of them and queues the rest. Im thinking this is tied to the tasks that it creates in Task Scheduler. Ive noticed that when you create a Quick Fields session, it creates a task in Task Scheduler. Same thing happens with Workflows. The problem I believe is that Workflow creates the task as a "Windows Vista/Windows 2008" type, and Quick Fields creates it as a "Windows  2003, Windows XP, Windows 2000" type. I believe that's the issue because with 2008 or higher types, under the "Settings" tab for the task, is the option "If the task is already running, then the following rule applies:" and then 4 options, including "Run a new instance in parallel". Since the Quick Fields task is 2003 type, it doesn't have that option. When I manually change the task type of the Quick Fields task to 2008, it no longer appears in the Quick Fields Administration program, and it doesn't seem that I can get it to run.

I could be way off on the cause of it not running multiple sessions at a time, but it seems like the most likely case. On the other hand, why has Workflow been updated to support/use 2008 task types and not Quick Fields? Anyone else having issues running multiple sessions and them being queued?

Btw, I had also made sure that the "Configure settings for Quick Fields Agent">"Parallel Processing" option was set to more than just 1 (ie set to 10).

Workflow was made later, so it got the newer task type (also, it doesn't support Windows 2003).

"Run a new instance in parallel" wouldn't apply to Quick Fields schedules because the Quick Fields Agent will queue subsequent runs of the same session anyway if it's already running. And each schedule in Quick Fields Agent would get its own corresponding Windows scheduled task, so they wouldn't be parallel instances of the same scheduled task.

That said, the task type shouldn't make a difference, the only thing that matters is the number of simultaneous sessions allowed to run under "Parallel Processing".

How many CPUs are on the machine? What version of Quick Fields is this? Have you tried restarting the Quick Fields Agent service after changing the number of parallel sessions?

Yep. Restarted service and actually Windows as well. Running Quickfields 9.0.0.427. There are 32 CPU cores (2 physical CPUs) and 32 GB RAM.
