Check Barcodes - Oracle 11.2g

asked on November 4, 2015

We would like to enhance our check process by adding 2D (or 3D) barcodes to the check runs.  The information would then be read by QF and filled into template fields.  "Unfortunately," the Finance Dept uses Oracle and we are primarily SQL-based:-)  What I'm wanting to know is if anyone has done this for an Oracle deployment and can share their experience.  The quote we got from our Oracle vendor is outrageous for something that really shouldn't be difficult, in my opinion.

We "know" which fields need to populate the barcode during the check run and the barcode software is readily available - though I understand why a company would purchase it vs using freeware.  I think the 50-60 hours of development time is excessive.  Any help/thoughts/etc is greatly appreciated!

The way that I normally recommend to set up a barcoded check process uses both barcode and real time lookup.

  1. Have check number preprinted on check (or stub) in a barcode when you order checks.
  2. Use Quick Fields to read check number barcode and look up all relevant info through ODBC

With this configuration, all you need from the finance system is a read only user login and perhaps a view or two if queries are complex.

Hmm... I like it!  I do know that I have to do this as "phase 2."  They need to update/apply hot fixes to their Oracle environment because I'm getting the ODBC error for 64 bit.

Thanks for your help!!

Quick Fields is a 32 bit process, so you need to install and configure the 32 bit Oracle ODBC driver on the QF machine.

Ohh!  That means I might not have to wait!!  Thanks for mentioning that!
