Question

Under Process Modeler, subsequent task is not getting started even though previous task finishes without issue.

asked on November 3, 2015

I have 3 service tasks in Process modeler. First is to save the form in repository. Second is to run a very lengthy workflow. Third is to run another small workflow.

The results page shows that the process is getting stuck at second task (running very lengthy workflow) and it does NOT run the third task.

But, when I check the Workflow Designer results page, the second task is getting completed successfully without error. But for some reason, third task is not getting kicked off after second one finishes.

Is there a ‘time-out’ period that is causing it? As I said, second task runs a very lengthy workflow and it might take few mins before it finishes successfully.

Please see screenshot of the Process Modeler showing all three tasks. Also, screenshot from Workflow Designer showing the workflow was completed successfully.

There's not enough information to troubleshoot. Is your first Service Task set to wait for workflow to complete? If not, then it has nothing to do with what you see in the Workflow instance details. Have you checked the Forms instance's status? Have you checked the Event Viewer on the Forms server for any errors at the time when this occurred?

Hi Miruna,

Please see answers below to your questions-

1. No, service tasks are NOT set to wait for the workflow to complete.

2. The Form instance status shows that workflow is still in progress. (see screenshots).

3. I see following WARNING message in the Event viewer at the time. - "The TextProvider process was terminated due to an unhandled exception when extracting text from a document. Search catalog: March-Vision-Care-DEV. Entry ID: 163700. This is usually caused by a problematic IFilter or a corrupted document. Please install a proper IFilter and see if it solves the problem. You can also skip the problematic type of electronic documents by modifying the BlockedExtensions list in registry." (see screenshot)

Actually, the whole thing was working fine until 2 weeks ago. I added more activities in the 'second' workflow that made it even longer to finish. So, I get the feeling that it is being caused due the very lengthy workflow.

The TextProvider warning looks like it's coming from the search engine, so it shouldn't be related. If you're not waiting for the workflow to complete, then adding more activities and its duration shouldn't make any difference.

Your screenshot shows there are suspended tasks in the Forms processes. So there should be corresponding messages in the Event Viewer for those dates and times. It's probably best if you take this to Tech Support so the Forms team can take a closer look.
