Question

Import Agent - Versioning

asked on October 28, 2015

Is it possible to set Import Agent to create a new version for a file when it saves a file with the same name?  Also, maybe give the ability to add the timestamp as the comment for this?  Let me know if anyone else has run across this and has a way to do so.

Thanks,

Nate

Nate - Couldn't you do this with workflow?  i.e. drop the new Import Agent document into an Inbox, check to see if the same document name exists in the Destination Folder, if it does then put the destination document under version control (if it is not already), copy the pages from the source document to the destination document (which would create a new version), and set the latest version comments to the date/time?

Cliff,

This would work, but then when a user pulls this file up (from external application) it would show ALL pages and I just want them to see the most recent page(s).  This process happens frequently, so there is the possibility of having up to 50 pages for a shipment.  Maybe versionsing will be part of Workflow 10!

Thanks for the suggestion

Nate

Putting a document under version control is available in Workflow 9.2. Once a document is under version control any changes will generate new versions.

Are you talking about electronic documents? That's the only case where Cliff's solution would need a bit of tweaking to download the electronic e-doc from the first doc and attach it to the second doc.

Nate - How about deleting all of the pages in the target document before you add the newly imported pages?  That would still trigger a new version and if you look at the latest version you will only see the newest pages.  The 'older' pages would still be available in the earlier versions

Cliff - Deleting pages scares me because these are 'shipment' documents that we must have in order to bill our customers.  If anything got deleted and was not recoverable, I'd be on the hook for that!  Not something I like to do!  It'd be nice if I saved an image with the same name, that it would say 'Hey, this has version control on and this doc has the same name, lets create a new version!!'  This is a fantasy world, but definitely something to consider for a future feature release.

Thanks,

Nate
