Question

Dynamic PDFs are not supported.

asked on October 28, 2015

I am getting the error Dynamic PDFs are not supported. [0551-WF1] when trying to extract data from a PDF.

From the little research I have done the problem as I understand it is that some PDF's are created with the ability to change and grow as users type more information into the fields. In mine for example there is a table at the bottom that only takes up a quarter of the page.  However when text is typed in over the amount that will fit in the table the table grows and begins to take up more of the page.  This type of form is not supported by Laserfiche workflow.  I have converted this form to a static version and it works fine however this is not acceptable to the customer.  They need to be able print the form in the case that sending the form in for extraction is not possible.  So the text on the form needs to be in a readable font and not be truncated.

My questions are:

Am I correctly understanding the problem here?  Is this really the reason I am getting this error?  If this is the case will these type of forms be supported in the future?  Is there another solution to the problem?

Thanks in advance

Yes, you are correct. No, there is no workaround at this time. Unfortunately, the 3rd party library we use for processing PDFs does not support dynamic PDFs and there is virtually no support for them outside of Adobe products.

One possible workaround in Workflow 10 will be to use Word documents instead through the new Update Word Document activity (which can be converted to PDFs after filling them in). But I'd need to know more about your use of PDF forms to tell for sure if it's a viable solution.
