Currently in Forms 9.2.1 when you cancel an instance it just cancels it and will display to those looking at their history that is was cancelled. This raises questions some times with our employees as to why the instance was cancelled. It would be nice if when cancelling an instance if it prompted the user for a reason for the cancellation and then displayed that in the different reporting areas of the system.

I realize this is an older question but for any other individuals that stumble upon it looking for answers like me, what I do is I re-assign the task to myself and in the re-assignment message I put why the instance is being canceled. This way it records it and shows it in the instance monitoring history. Not perfect, but will work until hopefully the feature request is implemented.
