Error when trying to delete unused data sources

asked on October 1, 2015 Show version history

I am unable to remove data sources that I have confirmed are not used by any  workflows. In the Workflow Admin Console, under Data Sources, when I use "Manage Data Sources" then select a data source and click 'Remove' it asks 'Are you sure' and when I click Yes I get an error:

There are two types of data sources I'm trying to clean up:

1. Ones that point to servers or databases that are no longer in use, and so new sources have been created to replace them, and the new sources were applied to all relevant workflows.

2. Ones that I chose to rename in the Workflow Import wizard so as to not overwrite valid data sources when migrating from a Test Environment to a Production environment. (In this case it is true that those Test data sources are still used - but in a differently named repository on a different LF server.)

Any suggestions on how I can clean up these unwanted data sources that persist in claiming they belong to a published workflow when as far as I can tell they do not?  (I am on Workflow 9.0.)

Barry -

That is exactly what it's doing - every time you make a change to a workflow and publish it, the previous version is archived. In WF Admin Console, go to the Workflows>Workflow Definitions node, right-click the workflow in question and select View Version History. From there, you can select and delete any of the older versions that contain reference to the Data Source. After they're removed, you should be able to delete the Data Source.

Note that if you do this, you'll no longer be able to access the old versions of the workflow that you deleted.

You can delete the older version from the WF Admin Console first (right-click on the workflow name under Workflows and select View Version History), then you will be able to delete the data source.

Deleting a specific version is only possible if there are no running instances (you'll get a message if there are). Any completed instances that you have in the database for that version will still show their details.

You can view which workflows are still linked to the data source from the WF Admin Console under Data Sources.

That helped a bit, because upon review I did find one workflow with disabled activities that were still tied to the old data source. However what the list of linked workflows mainly shows are prior versions of the workflow that no longer exist. By any chance does it somehow take into account workflows that I have saved during the course of working on them? If not how do I remove the references to the older versions?
