Alternate Search: Knowledge Base article 1013173

asked on September 29, 2015

Has anyone experimented with the alternate search behavior as defined in this KB article?  On version 9.1.1 we have been experiencing problems with system availability due to users executing large searches that render server unresponsive. This sound similar to the behavior described in the KB article. I am curious if anyone has had any success mitigating these types of performance/availability issues with this configuration change.

Hello Ryland,

There are several possible reasons you are running into search performance issues. Search performance depends on a wide range of factors including how users are executing these searches, their security settings, as well as how your system architecture is set up. That said, there are a number of things you can try:

  • If your repository is particularly large, the solution in your KB article could be a good place to start troubleshooting.
  • Try disabling Fuzzy Search and limit the index search results in the Options Menu.  The system may be trying to return too many results.
  • If filter expressions are not used in your repository, you can assign the Bypass Filter Expression Privilege to the Everyone Group.  That way, the system has to calculate one less thing before returning results.
  • If your repository contains a lot of shortcuts, it may also be helpful to disable “resolve shortcuts” in the Options Menu.

Again, the solution that is appropriate for you will depend on your setup.  For additional suggestions and detailed background information, you can check out the presentation Improving Search Efficiencies and this case study on Laserfiche search performance.

I hope this helps!
