Question

OMR inside or outside the mark perimeter

asked on September 23, 2015 Show version history

I was helping a customer fix an OMR issue. Placing the box inside the perimeter where the user should mark the form like this resolved the problem.

I can't find anything about this in the documentation though. The training videos show that the box should be around the perimeter, not inside of it. How do you know when to put the box inside and when to put the box around the perimeter.

When using Auto-OMR, the green region is supposed to go around a sample markable feature and that needs to include the border of the markable feature for it to be considered valid. The point of the green region is to show what a "blank" feature looks like. The blue region is the search area which tells Quick Fields were to look for these markable features.

When it comes to actually seeing if an item is marked or not when Quick Fields processes a form, then it works best when you use the color removal process (to reduce the amount of noise on the form) and to also place that particular region inside the border so there's less chance of a false positive being considered.

Hi Chad,

I can't address your question myself, but I wanted to let you know that none of your images except for the first are displaying for us. Try re-uploading them?

I only meant to upload the one image. Where the black box is inside the perimeter of the marking area. We put our boxes around the perimeter as it is recommended by the training material. Now we are being asked to re-build all of our OMR sessions and change them to inside the perimeter. The customer would like to know why? Everything was working fine.

OMR is not an exact science, so whatever gets the best results is what you should use.

If everything is working fine now, like you said in your most recent post, then I don't see any reason to go through sessions and change your OMR settings. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding.

If someone is asking you to re-build all your sessions, including sessions with no issues, I'd directly ask whoever that is why. Since we don't have much context here, it's difficult to interpret what they may have meant and why they may have said it. If you have a link to the "training materials" you refer to, that may be helpful.

If you are having issues where a session that has OMR suddenly stopped working and would like to ask the community for help troubleshooting, more details on whatever may have changed for your sessions would help (e.g., was there a change in the master form)?

I have been submitting sessions to support because they have not been working correctly. Areas that have no marks in them are showing as marked. They are unwilling to fix the problem because they said the OMR is configured incorrectly by placing the area around the perimeter for the mark area. Look at this screenshot from the instructional video. We are placing the zone around the bubble. It seems odd that support will not assist because we are "doing it wrong".

If placing the OMR zone inside the bubble works better for your forms, then it seems like that's what you should do. If, after adjusting OMR for one of your problematic forms, the same issue is occurring, then you've narrowed down the problem. If it does work better, then you know what it is you need to do to get other sessions working. As I mentioned, OMR is not an exact science. Perhaps the forms you are using have relatively thick circle outlines, or perhaps that video is outdated based on the most recent release.

If you provide me a link/more information on where that documentation is, I can pass along a request to include more information on the variability of OMR in the future.

So the blue region goes around the marking area and the text. The green region goes around the marking area and the perimeter of the marking area. The black region goes inside the perimeter for the marking area?
