Question

Find out who deleted a shortcut

asked on September 22, 2015 Show version history

Hi,

We are using Laserfiche V9 in our environment. One of the LF workflow creates shortcuts in a certain folder. Someone in the team has deleted some shortcuts and we want to find out who it is. Because, deleted shortcuts don't go to the recycle bin, is there any other way of getting this information?

Q#2 Additionally, is there a way to find out all actions (like a user log) performed a certain user?

Thanks!

Hi Anoop,

Do you have audit trail configured? If you do you should be able to see all actions performed by users and the system (providing it is set up to audit this data). Hopefully this also answers your second question! Audit trail is an add in however which has to be purchased separately to the client/server.

Hope this helps!

Daniel's right. If configured, Audit Trail tracks and shows you all Laserfiche actions performed by users, which includes deleting shortcuts.

You may also want to reconsider your security/access right policies to prevent your users from deleting future shortcut.

Hi Daniel, Cathy

It does look like Auditing is turned on. I can see the path where the log files are stored, however, I can't view the contents of the log using notepad++ or notepad. All I see is unicode characters and symbols when I open it.

Do I need a special software to look at the log file?

Thanks

The Audit Trail reporter imports the audit logs into a SQL database and provides a UI to generate reports on them. This component is included as part of the Laserfiche Server installation, but needs to be installed seperately.

I found the Audit Trail page soon after my previous post :) Thanks, now I will have a play around with it and find the culprit.

If you find out who deleted the shortcut, I would like to know as I had this issue and tried the Audit Trail to find out who it was.  I was very new and had never used the Audit Trail reporting tool ever.  After initial investigation, I was given the impression that Audit Trail does not track the deletion of shortcuts.  If that is not true, I definitely would like to know.

Thx, Connie Prendergast, Flagstaff County

Connie -

From the Audit Trail help file's event description for Delete Entry:

Tracks when a document, folder, or shortcut is deleted. This event is tracked whether or not the recycle bin is enabled or disabled.

So it should be tracking this...

Thanks, Jim.  The other possibility as to why we couldn't find it in our Audit Trail was that maybe the Workflow tool had deleted the shortcuts, and maybe A.T. was not set up to track anything Workflow does.  I should double check what those settings are.
