Question

Naming restriction of document/folder in repository

asked on September 22, 2015 Show version history

What is the maximum characters and/or restriction (i.e. special characters) for document and folders name in Laserfiche repository?  If a workflow try to assign a value that violate the naming restriction, what would be the behaviour?  Also if a workflow try to assign metadata that exceed field length or invalid format such as date, what would be the behaviour?  Thanks.

I asked sort of this same question before here:

https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/55372/invalid-characters--what-are-they-in-regards-to-Laserfiche

I try to avoid things that are bad inside Windows as well in case the document or folder is ever exported.

The maximum number of characters is 255.

Thanks Chris.  We already have document name with windows reserved character '|', which seems to be allowed on LF.  I agree we should avoid those as well.  If this came up earlier this would have been avoided.  I know we should prevent this, but do you know what happens when workflow try to assign invalid name to document or invalid value to metadata?

If it's a bad char in Laserfiche, it won't let you publish it. If this is filled in with a token, it will error out at that point and not finish the workflow.

If it's a forward slash as part of the name it will treat it as a character in some situations and as the start of a subfolder in others!
