Question

Word Add-In Save as New Version Option

asked on September 16, 2015

I am working with a client where some user's have the option to click on the Laserfiche Ribbon tab and then click Save to Laserfiche and they get 2 separate options:  "as New Document" and "as New Version"  and then other users only have the "as New Document" option.  I have tried to figure out a common factor, however, I have been unable to determine why some have both options and others only have 1.  They are all using LF client 9.2.0 and they are all using Office 2010.  Some users are 32 vs 64 bit, however, that is also a mixed bag because it works for some users on both bits.  As of right now I am unable to determine why some users have both options and others only have the one.  Any feedback about this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Derick,

I'm going to have a wild stab in the dark....

I'm assuming this is likely to be linked to access rights, in that the users who have both new document and new version after opening a document from Laserfiche have read/write access to the documents they have opened, and the users that only have new documents have read only access...

If you open the Word document from the Laserfiche Client itself, then you can save it back as a new document or new version. You also have the option to save it back as a new document in a link group if the document was a member of one.

If you opened a Word document that was outside of Laserfiche, then you only have the option of saving it as a new document.

I understand what you are saying Alex, however, this is not the case here.  We can open the same document from within Laserfiche on 2 different user's PC's and 1 of the user's have both "Save as New" and "Save New Version" and the other user only has the "Save as New".  Now if I hit the X (close) word after making changes it prompt's me to save and gives me all of the right options:  Save as New, New Version, Discard Changes, etc.  Even inside of my personal version of Word, I don't even have the "Save new Version" option.  I cleared my attributes and that didn't help.  I can recreate the scenario that Alex is referring to about it only showing up when I open a document directly from LF if I do it from a user's PC that can see both options.

To answer Chris, I am a full administrator inside of LF so I don't think it is permissions related.  I am not sure why some people can see both options and others can only see the 1.

You may want to open a support case so the matter can be looked into further.

Was this ever resolved? I have a user with the same problem BUT in some word documents in Laserfiche (within the same folder) the user is able to save as a new version but others she only gets a prompt to save as a new document.

Hi Dennis, this will be because some documents are under version control.

This particular user was able to save as a new version previously on the document that only allows her to now save as a new document. Other staff can save as a new version when they make changes to the that document. Could the user have done something to prohibit her from saving as a new version.

Ah! I mis-read your original post.

So if the user opens a document and only sees the option to create a new document, chances are they have read-only access to that document.
