Question

Can you stay in the current field when moving between documents?

asked on September 10, 2015

I see that the scan module has an option to select the current field when navigating to a document.  I can't find this option in Client.  Can anyone tell me if this is possible in Client?

Hi Jennifer,

It sounds like you're looking for a way to edit metadata fields for documents in the repository without having to click around too much. If that's the case, I played around with the options in the client and don't believe the specific "Select the Current Field" function is available in the Document Viewer.

However, one workaround that I found is to use Alt+Down Arrow to navigate to the next document in a folder. It won't keep your cursor in the current field, but it will select the first field on the template so you can tab your way to the field you need to edit. This way, you can just use keyboard commands instead of also clicking.

I hope this helps. I'd also be happy to pass this on to our development team for the future if there's a specific use case you had in mind.

Specifically what I am needing this for is that I have a group of users that will have 1000 documents.  Most of the fields are the same and filled in all at once or by workflow.  For each of the 1000 documents, there is 1 field that will always be different and always have to be entered by hand.

I was hoping that they could enter the field in 1 document and when the move to the next document it would stay in that field so they didn't have to click in the field again or tab through a bunch of fields.

I are looking to see if the end user agrees to us moving the field to the first location in the template so they don't have to tab through a lot of fields.

In my experience, using a keyboard shortcut to move to the next document does not leave the cursor in the first field.  Maybe I have something set wrong there.  When I use a keyboard shortcut to move to the next document, I can't type right away, but have to tab once or twice just to get into the first field.

What version of the client are you on? I tested the keyboard shortcuts a few times and it seems to work consistently in 9.2.1 even when I save changes (using Ctrl+S).

Outside of this workaround, another idea might be for your users to use Universal Capture to bring the documents into the Scanning module before routing them to the workflow to fill in the other fields. Because the client isn't specifically designed to edit so many documents at a time, it might be better to do this step first to take advantage of the "Select the Current Field" option in Scanning. I don't know if your business process allows for this, but in the case that it does, it could save you some time.

We are using Client 9.0.3.  The other thought I had was that it may be inconsistent for me because the current first field is a drop down box.

Thanks.
