Question

Migrating Workflow 8.3 to an existing Workflow 9.1

asked on September 1, 2015

We are looking to migrate from a 8.3 workflow server to an existing 9.1 workflow server with the obvious issue being that the 9.1 database is already created and we cannot just move the 8.3 database. We looked at a couple different ways to tackle this but can't seem to come up with a solid idea.

What is the best practice way to accomplish this without having our users work out of two systems until all the 8.3 workflows have completed their processes?

Thanks

The running instances can't be moved. You can export your workflows from 8.3 and import them to the new server. Then disable starting rules on the 8.3 so no new workflows will be started.

If 9.1 is not already monitoring the repository 8.3 was using, then you want to add it, using the Attach option instead of "Add" and pointing to the 8.3 WF Server. That way both servers have access to it.

Once all the instances in 8.3 have completed, you can decommission it. Whether you have one or 2 servers is transparent to LF users. Once you import the workflows into 9.1, the users designing workflows can point their Workflow Designers to the 9.1 server.

Thank you for the quick response. I guess my follow up to that would be when would be the best time to move the images from the 8.3 repository to the 9.1 repository? It doesn't sound like there is a good way to move the images that are part of an active workflow until the process has completed.

Oh, you're merging repositories too. Yes, you'd need to keep the active documents in the 8.3 repository.

That said, if these are either short-running or not very complicated workflows, it might be easier to just move everything and then restart them.

Sorry I should have been clearer on that part.

Most of these are short running workflows but the larger ones are also the more complicated. Thanks for the assistance I think we'll just have to let the users run in both systems for a little while until all the actives have completed.
