Question

Adobe, Laserfiche Pages, and Tiffs

asked on August 20, 2015

Can you confirm that the Laserfiche pages attached to the top three documents in the following printscreen are actually .tiff's even though the icons are not showing the same as the other .tiff's?

A bit more in-site:

  • A quick view of today's created documents found these three Adobe files. It has caused some confusion, as we are considering insisting that all documents (in the future) be brought into LF as tiffs.  We thought these were.  We need to know for certain before introducing this to the rest of our staff.
  • We have had huge debates regarding pdf vs tiffs and decided we want the tiffs to eliminate future worries regarding Adobe software changes in the future causing us not to be able to open old documents.
  • We want to understand the difference between Laserfiche pages and .tiff documents in LF.  Are they, in fact, the same thing in this case, even thought the icon is showing differently?

Thx, Connie Prendergast, Flagstaff County

Connie, there's no way to tell from the screenshot. If you right-click the document and choose Open\Pages from the menu, you will open the image viewer so you can confirm there are image pages attached to it.

Yes, image pages are available as well as the pdf.  So, both are there.  But documents being brought in by the scanners are coming in as tiffs with one icon and documents being brought in by the import agent from our G: drive are coming in with the other icon.  Just some confusion.  We are hoping that both are tiff's even though the icons are different.

Scanned documents would only have images. Import Agent would import PDFs form your network drive and generate images from them (sounds like?). If a document has both images and an electronic document component, the Client displays the electronic document icon.

You can set Import Agent to discard the PDFs if you don't want or need them. Alternatively, you can set the Client to use image document icons for all electronic documents as well (Tools\Options\Browser\Settings).

Maybe, to narrow down what we are looking for confirmation on, our question should be:  Are all image pages tiffs, regardless of what icon is showing in the Client window?

The image pages that you see when you do open->pages are always TIFFs. Laserfice documents can have BOTH image pages and an affiliated efile. If an efile is present the Client will display the icon of that efile, but you're always working with the tiff image pages if you do open->pages and there are, in fact, pages. There are other ways to tell too - if you get thumbnails, it's got image pages. You can use the 'modify/remove electronic file' action in the Client or Web Access to remove just the efile part if that's problematic.

The one thing to watch for is that the desktop Client has the ability to display PDFs themselves in the doc viewer in the 'efile pane'. It's easy to tell though. The pane will have the adobe reader toolbar, you won't be able to annotate, the pane name will be efile. Just one thing to watch for.

Okay, sounds like we're good then.  Thanks!
