Question

Audit Trail Database Config freezing auth options

asked on July 27, 2015

Audit trail configuration for the database is asking a new question. Which DBMS type, SQL Express or Standard. Choosing SQL Standard allows us to fill in the rest of the info but does not save when we try to connect to a SQL express engine. If we choose SQL express then the system appears to freeze while loading the AUthentication options and we are unable to enter our authenitcation information.

When you set the DBMS Type to "MSSQL Express" then it requires using Windows Authentication to connect to the SQL Express instance. If the Audit Trail service account is running as an account with rights to SQL, then that should be fine. Just click the "Update" button and then you should be able to move onto the "Date Ranges" tab and configure a date range. Once that's done, a database should be created.

If you set the DBMS Type to "Standard MSSQL" then you can manually specify the SQL instance (even SQL Express) and also choose how you want to authenticate (Windows Authentication or Database Authentication). Then just click the "Update" button and then you can move onto the "Date Ranges" tab.

If you are getting any errors when trying to "Update" the database settings or notice that the database isn't getting created after you set a date range, then it'd be best to open a support case and provide the full text of any error messages you receive as well as the complete application event log.

Can you clarify your question?

If your intent is to use SQL Express but with Database/SQL Authentication instead of Windows Authentication, then just use the DBMS Type: Standard MSSQL. Note that there isn't anything that prevents you from having things configured in this manner, and it works just fine.

That was the first thing I attempted to do, figuring it was our only option. We got an error and dismissed it as not possible. I will try again when I have a chance and see what the error was.

What did the error say?

It said we needed named pipes. We enabled named pipes and it worked. The express option used TCP/IP. Looks like the drop down should say TCP/IP Win Auth or Named Pipes SQL Auth.
