Migrating documents triggered workflow

Please advise as to what may have caused workflow to trigger when we migrated documents to a new volume.

Do we need to disable the starting rules of the workflow before migrating the documents? What are our options?

Sounds like workflow saw it as a change to your documents. I would probably disable the change rules during migration

What will happen after we re-enable the starting rules after the volumes are migrated?

Will workflow recognize the change in the volume_ids and interpret these as change to the documents?

No, rules are only processed for new events coming in. Past events are not retroactively processed for the rule after it is enabled.
