change variable across multiple forms

I have multiple forms in a business process that have the same field/variable tied to them. If I need to go in later to update the field/variable on one form it isn't updating that variable across all forms. Is there an easier way to update that variable across all of the forms rather than deleting the field and adding the updated variable on every form?

How did you update the field/variable?

If you renamed the variable, all other forms should still use this variable with the new name.

If you changed the field setting, all other forms won't be updated to use the same setting, since we allow the settings to be different on different forms. You can just update the field setting on other forms and there is no need to delete then add it back.
