Question

How does the Directory Server count licenses?

asked on July 1, 2015

I needed to add one additional AD user account to the Directory Server and doing so would have exceeded my license count by one user, so I removed the Full license from one user and assigned it to the new user.

I then restarted the Laserfiche Server service to get it to sync with the new licensed user . As soon as I did that all of my users got kicked out of LF and could not log in. In the event log on the Laserfiche server I see this event:

The number of named user assignments exceeds the licensed limit.  Named user  sessions will not be permitted until the number of assigned named users is at or below the limit.

I have 55 named user licenses. I have 56 names in the Directory Server, with one of them showing “No License” and all the rest (55) showing “Full license”. I had to completely remove the user with no license and bounce the server service again to get things working.

Can someone explain to me why having 55 users with licenses and one without exceeds my license count? Am I not allowed to have a user account in the Directory Server without them being assigned a license?

What version of the Laserfiche Server and Laserfiche Directory Server is being used? I can't recreate this issue using Laserfiche Server 9.2.1 and Laserfiche Directory Server 9.2.1.

If this is an issue that you can consistently recreate, meaning in LFDS you have more Windows Accounts added than you have full licenses for (even though the extraneous users have (none) set as the license type) and when the Laserfiche Server service is restarted, the application event log reports that it has exceeded the named user limit, then please open a support case so the matter can be investigated further.

It is Directory Server 9.2.0.453 and Laserfiche 9.2.1.562. I will run some tests to try and duplicate the issue this afternoon.

Please be sure to upgrade to Laserfiche Directory Server 9.2.1 as well.
