Question

Capturing GeoTag information through Laserfiche Mobile Forms.

asked on June 22, 2015

I have a client that is needing to capture the Geo Tracking information of a picture that is uploaded through Forms.  After speaking with the client I have obtained some detailed information on what does work and what doesn't work in this process.

  • Uploading an image through LF Forms using Chrome does not provide the JPEG properties of the Geo Tracking information.
  • Using LF Mobile inside of Web Access, you can take a picture and upload it to your repository and it will retain the Geo Tracking properties.
  • Using LF Mobile and then Filling out a Form, when you take a picture and upload the photo does not contain the Geo Tracking properties.  It appears that Mobile launches 2 completely different picture capture tools if you are using Mobile inside your repository of if you are using mobile and connected to a Form.
  • Work Around:  Trying to use JavaScript to capture the Long & Lat of the mobile device.  This seems to work if you use Chrome from the mobile device with Forms, but if you are using LF Mobile and connected to the Form, it does not capture Long & Lat.

Here is the Scenario of why the client wants this so I am hoping for maybe some ideas or feedback from others.  They are wanting citizens to be able to fill out a Form because of Pot Holes and upload a picture of the Pot Hole.  With Geo Tracking the Road works would be able to know or find the exact location of the Pot Whole and repair it.  However, capturing the Long & Lat through LF Mobile (Forms) does not appear to be working.  Is this something that should be working out of the box or does LF Mobile (Forms) treat a Form differently and does not give you that capability.

Thanks

It appears as if this post has had quite a few views, however, no one from LF has replied?  My next step will be to open a case for this, but I figured Answers would be a good first step to see if anyone has ever tried this and/or if this even works through LF Mobile (Forms).

Thanks

Hi Derick

Forms will be adding a geo location type field. When that form is loaded in Laserfiche Mobile, tap to get current location will fill in the geo info of the person.

Hence, to resolve the case, user will fill in a form, upload an image, and tap on the Location field to get the geo information of the issue.

Do you think this can address your issue? Or do you have to link the Geo information to the JPEG property?

Meanwhile, since Laserfiche doc in WA already has document, Laserfiche Mobile will also be working on a view that shows the documents around current location. Hope that can help the field worker later.

Thank you for bringing us the case.

The reason why your custom JavaScript to store long&lat works from Chrome or Safari but not in LFMobileForms is because of security restrictions enforced on the embedded browser control. Thank you for reporting this problem - we will address it in a future iteration of the apps - we will apply the geolocation information when capturing images for Forms fields and will use the same camera capture technique for Forms and documents added to the Laserfiche repository. Both will allow the same on device image processing options as well.
