Question

Zone OCR and Text File??

asked on June 19, 2015

I have a client that get's a report as a text file (it is formatted), and my question is do I have to Snapshot the text file in order to utilize Zone OCR or is there a way to run the text file through QF and capture the necessary data?  Basically there is a Trace Number that is in the same location on every report and I want to capture that number and that number only, however, due to the size of the report, I'm concerned on how long it will take to Snapshot prior to running through Quickfields.  I"m open to other suggestions as well.

Thanks!

Zone OCR only runs on images. You can run pattern matching on the text page.

So Miruna...you're saying I can just OCR the Text File and then PM the Trace Number?  Do you know which process would be more efficient/quicker?

No, OCR works on images only as well. But you don't need OCR since you already have the text page. If it's not there already, you can add the txt extension to the File Conversion list in the Client's options. Then importing the file into Laserfiche will automatically convert it to text pages.

If they are just a few files here and there, I would use workflow to pattern match the extracted text of the document and obtain the information.  If you are getting lots of these files, like our customers do, we built an application for processing and extracting information from text based documents and then storing them in LF as PDF files or images.   Our clients use them for system reports, client statements, notices, etc.

Here's a link on the LF marketplace.  https://www.laserfiche.com/marketplace/marscold/  .
