Maximum number of child-entries per folder?

One of our customers has many folders in their repository, some of which have over 15,000 child-entries (mostly shortcuts, but potentially folders and documents as well). When they click on one of these folders, it takes a while to load. Maybe 30 seconds or more. Is there a best practice/recommendation for the maximum number of child-entries per folder, before you can expect to see any type of performance reduction? I thought I remember seeing something in the documentation years ago.... but I can't seem to find anything about it now.

It's hard to say. It depends on how many entries you have, how you set up your security, how many columns you're displaying in the documents pane, what they are and their respective security settings.
