Question

OCR Quality Loss on typewriter documents

asked on June 9, 2015

I'm bringing archive documents into Laserfiche that date back to the 1940s and 50s. Obviously these documents were produced on a typewriter rather than a computer. I'm seeing a definite loss in quality of the OCR for text searches. I've already gone and switched the documents to be OCR'd for accuracy rather than "balanced" are their any other tricks to get a better quality OCR?

Based on my own testing on version 9.2.1, I can comfirm Tessa's suggestion.

The first page of the document can be enhanced with the Smooth process. This process can be found in Quick Fields, as well as the Standard Mode in Laserfiche Scanning.

The second process would be the OCR process, with Accuracy option.

When these two processes are used, the OCR result looks fine to me. Below is an excerpt of the text. The full OCR result can be found in the attached file.

Getting good OCR results often involves a bit of trial and error, so it's hard to know without seeing the documents, but two good processes I would suggest trying are Smoothing and Despeckle
