Question

Can Start Business Processes From Client, Cannot From Web Access

asked on May 27, 2015

We have a client on 9.2.1 that can start Business Processes from the full client as normal, but the same Business Processes are grayed out in Web Access. We have tried this under multiple logins (including Admin) as well as on the server itself with the same result. Am I missing something in Web Access configuration?

Thanks!

Hey Jim,

We're seeing something similar for documents that meet all the conditions. For such documents, we observe the following behavior:

  • BP is disabled on valid documents when opening the start BP dialog for the first time following login
  • After closing and reopening the document, the BP is enabled and starts correctly. It start correctly for the duration of the session.

For the folder case, it's expected that the BP would remain disabled due to your condition 'Type equals Document'. Is there another BP you're observing this behavior with? If you can reproduce with a BP whose conditions allow it to be started on folders, let us know and we'll take another look.

For your reference, the bug report for the document issue is SCR128237. We'll look to fix the issue in a future release. If the customer considers this a high priority issue, open a support case and we can look into a custom fix.

Thanks for making us aware of this issue!

What are the conditions in the business process starting rule? What version of Web Access are you using?

Thanks for the response Miruna! This is happening for all Business Process workflows, not just one; however I am attaching a screenshot of the starting rule of one of them. Also, the Business Processes can be started normally in the full client, just not in Web Access. WA is on the newest version available - 9.2.0.67.

Thanks!

Hey Jim,

We're looking into reproducing this now. Out of curiosity- do your users use the 'thumbnail view' settings in the folder browser?

For clarification- thumbnail view is where your documents and folders show up as tiles in the folder browser. There's a known issue that appears only in thumbnail view that may be causing this.

Hi Ryan -

Thanks for looking into this, and after further testing, I have some findings. First, none of the users are using thumbnail view in Web Access, and we were not using it when testing - it is the standard folder view.

Further, we have found that if the starting entry of a business process is a document, when you log into Web Access and select the document, the Start Business Process  button for that process is grayed out, however, if you do anything that refreshes the screen - click Refresh, fill a field, rename the doc, etc. - this will activate the Start Business Process button, and you can now start the business process normally.

If the starting entry of a business process is a folder, this does not work. With folders, if you select the folder in the left pane (the folders pane), the Start Business Process button is always grayed out - refreshing does not make it active; however, if you select the folder in the right pane (the contents pane), the Start Business Process button is active immediately, and no refresh is necessary.

I don't think this is a general bug, as I can't remember ever seeing it before in any other environment, but I can't be certain. At least now, I have some pretty specific conditions under which the issue is happening, so hopefully you'll be able to reproduce it or not.

Thanks for your time!

For the issue where you have a business process that runs on a folder, we're aware of an issue where the business process can't be started when you access the folder from the folder tree, but does work fine if you access the same folder from the entry pane on the right. This issue may also only be limited to business processes that have a path requirement.

Yes, Ryan - there is a different BP with starting condition Type = Folder, and that is the one exhibiting the issues described for folders - here is a screenshot of the starting rule (with some redactions):

I see. Are they opening the 'Start BP' dialog from the folder tree?

There's a known issue (SCR123586) where BPs with path based requirements always show as false in the folder tree. It should show as enabled in the contents pane, assuming all other conditions are met.

We have this issue as well but in 10.4. Posted but have not received any responses. :(    https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/194500/BP-will-not-run-on-Web-Client-but-no-issues-running-it-in-Laserfiche-Client
