We are not using Forms or Workflows yet. Is there a simple method to set up a notification on a document or folder if a file is added or modified? Thanks.

What kind of notifications are you looking for? The simplest way involves workflow.
Workflow seemed to be the best answer for me as well. However, workflow has not been made available to us. I had several years administering and training on another EDMS and setting up notifications on specific folders/documents was a very simple setup for users - one time setup in personal settings and from that point forward, all they had to do was right click on the specific folder/document to select that they wanted to receive notifications on it. Just wondering if there is something similar with LF. Seems like a lot of tasks can be completed with LF workflows if we have access to it.
Your organization has a Laserfiche Avante system so you are definitely able to take advantage of Workflow. I would suggest getting in touch with the Laserfiche decision makers at your organization (if applicable) and your reseller to discuss ways that you can benefit from using Workflow.
